Buddhism, which arose in India during the 6th century BC, was founded on three pillars of faith, known as the "Three Jewels": Buddha (the founder of Buddhism), the Dharma (Buddha's doctrine) and the Sangha (community of the faithful). Buddhism reached China in around the 1st century AD. Buddha means "enlightened", the one who achieves Nirvana in this world: the central character of Buddhism. Siddharta, a Hermit prince, taught people through his example to give up earthly goods and elevate their spirits.
