The original is in terra cotta and was created under the Northern Wei dynasty (386-534). The seventh animal in the Chinese zodiac, the horse is respected for its sturdiness, independence and noble bearing. A faithful companion in battle, the horse was an animal venerated and prized by the aristocracy. High-ranking dignitaries and emperors would request to be buried with sculpted representations of their horses.
