Lucien Gibert graduated from the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts. He started out independently under the advice of Despiau who steered his efforts towards a less conventional art, yet Maillol remained his main mentor. He liked to sculpt directly from solid stone or marble. Shown in many private collections, he created a significant number of monuments and designed over 200 medals for the Monnaie de Paris, where he was a Director.
